December 15, 2009 - We welcomed four new additions to our family.
The pullets were hatched from April to late May of 2009.
None of the four are closely related,
but were obtained from the same breeder.
They should start laying eggs early this spring
as the daylight starts to be around 14 hours per day.

As soon as we get to know our girls,
Rod will give them appropriate names.
They all have unusual colors:
brown red - black with red hackles
buff columbian - buff with black markings on the tail
silver blue - dark blue with some white lacing on the throat
ginger blue - blue with yellow hackles and shading throughout
Two of the four are part of Bryant Helvey's
ginger red/ginger blue breeding project.
He is the only known breeder in the US working on these colors.
December 2009:
Rake leaves, clean up beds and mulch
Shut down irrigation, blow out pipes, cover hose bibs

A sunny Fall evening and a frosty morning.

We're getting ready for our October 17th event...additional parking with irrigation
and the pumpkin patch featuring lots of varieties.

August 2009 - It's been a dry summer, so we're watering around the clock. Though most of the gardens have an irrigation system, some plants and our containers need a little more attention.

The veggie garden gets a sod path and irrigation system.

Bare root roses planted in February are in full bloom by July,

May 2009 -
The Tussie-Mussie Garden features perennials and annuals.
Because the area was so deep and lush,
we had a hard time picking flowers and maintaining the beds.
This spring, we placed bricks to form a simple,
yet decorative pattern to access the flowers.
Come winter when the plants are gone,
the pattern will still give the garden interest.
In the background, the aerial hedges are just starting to push their spring leaves.

April 21- It finally feels like spring! After the wet, windy and cold winter, we're junkin' the dead and damaged trees and shrubs. The weeds and weed seeds are in full force. Not too many slugs...yet. We're busy pruning, fertilizing, replanting and mulching.
March 18 - we transplanted an existing boxwood parterre. Hopefully it will survive and thrive. It's the first planting in our Italian Garden.
February 18, 2009
At the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, the American Horticultural Society Award went to "Rock Solid Conifers", designed by Rod Juntunen, who also created it along with Wells Nursery and Marenakos Rock Center.

We're almost finished with our Wall Rose Garden construction and
are looking forward to spring and summer!
